Pre-Treatment Instructions
At Greater Dental Health, your safety and comfort are our top priorities. Please carefully read and follow the instructions below before your upcoming treatment. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact our office. We are here to help!
Medications
- Continue Prescribed Medications: Please continue taking your regularly prescribed medications, such as those for blood pressure, thyroid issues, and any other medical conditions, unless otherwise directed by our office. If you have concerns about a specific medication, please contact us before your appointment or ask during your consultation.
- Antibiotics: If your healthcare provider has recommended taking antibiotics prior to your procedure (due to conditions such as mitral valve prolapse, heart murmur, rheumatic heart disease, or a prosthesis), make sure you have the correct antibiotic on hand and take it as instructed on the day of your treatment.
- Anti-Inflammatory Medication: To reduce inflammation, we recommend taking over-the-counter ibuprofen (Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) prior to your treatment unless contraindicated by your physician.
- Avoid Alcohol: Please avoid consuming alcohol while taking any of these medications, as it may interfere with the effectiveness of the medication or cause adverse reactions.
Food and Water
- Eat and Stay Hydrated: We recommend eating a full breakfast or lunch before your appointment and drinking hydrating liquids. This helps ensure you remain comfortable throughout your treatment.
Transportation
- Driving After Treatment: For most procedures, local anesthesia is used, and most patients are able to drive themselves afterward. However, you may experience numbness for a few hours post-treatment, so use your best judgment when deciding whether to drive. If you feel more comfortable having someone accompany you, we recommend arranging transportation to and from your appointment.
First Appointment
- Consultation and Treatment: Your first appointment will typically be a consultation where we will explain your diagnosis, treatment options, and any necessary procedures. Depending on your medical history or the complexity of your treatment plan, a second appointment may be needed for treatment.
- What to Bring:
- Your referral slip and any applicable X-rays.
- A list of medications you are currently taking.
- A valid photo ID and current dental insurance card (if applicable).
- Important for Minors: A parent or guardian must accompany all patients under 18 for their consultation visit.
- Alert Us About Health Conditions: Please inform us if you have any medical conditions that might be relevant to your treatment (e.g., diabetes, high blood pressure, artificial heart valves or joints, rheumatic fever) or if you are on any medications (e.g., heart medications, aspirin, anticoagulants). If you need antibiotics or pre-medication prior to treatment, such as for dental cleanings, please let us know.
X-rays
- Diagnostic X-rays: During your consultation, we will take X-rays as necessary to evaluate the need and viability of your treatment. This will help us provide the best care possible for your specific needs.
We look forward to helping you achieve optimal dental health. If you have any questions or concerns before your treatment, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our office.
